I need to rethink that. There is no real reason for anyone to join. It's just a friendly community, when some are so elitist. It's just a neutral, friendly forum. Basically in it for the community, that's all.

Half Life 2 was not scary for me. Half Life is designed primarily to propell the story forwards. It's a very good game story-wise. However, it was never particularly jumpy or frightening. There was a bit of atmosphere in Ravenholm but nothing that I found particularly scary.

Which operating system are you using. Apart from that have you tried reinstalling. By reinstalling I mean remove, reboot, install as administrator. If that is what you did, there is a possibility that there is a colliding piece of software on your computer which is causing STEAM to work...
It is a problem with STEAM, to download it from anywhere else would be ILLEGAL even if you did purchase it off of STEAM. Reboot STEAM (log off and back on) and see if the file download starts, if this fails reboot your computer and try again.

Sounds like your game files are buggy. Delete the GCF files from your "steamapps" directory and reinstall.
If that doesn't work - right click the "Half Life 2: Episode 2" if your steam list, go to Properties and then to "Set Launch Options" and type "-dxlevel 90"
