Obviously. But isn't it natural to assume that if two games (both of which have higher RAM/system requirements when running at full detail) run well on my computer, that a game with lower requirements would also run well?

Exactly, the problem seems to be caused entirely by the Source engine's audio code. After so many months of so little progress, I doubt that it'll ever be fixed to everyone's satisfaction.
Half-Life 2's textures, sounds and pretty much everything else are stored in compressed GCF files. The reason the game has such ridiculously long load times is because the relavant assets for the upcoming map are being decompressed and *then* loaded into memory.

1. 3d GTA games have been developed with the PS2 in mind. I'm still kinda surprised that my PS2 even runs San Andreas.
2. I don't know if you noticed, but the GTA engine has to worry about a LOT more than anything going on in HL2. Plus, there's the whole streaming...
i'm 99% sure that you'll be able to buy day of defeat: source seperately. anything else just doesn't make sense.
i can't imagine they'd charge too much for it. i hope not, anyway.
there are also subtle gameplay differences.
for example, have you noticed that the headcrabs all act like hl2 headcrabs? ie. faster, but you can kill them with one crowbar whack.
