I agree wholeheartedly. Their best effort for an awesome game by far was Quake 3, and thats because it was pure deathmatch and the gameplay didnt need any work on it. They just had to make graphics, maps and netcode, and the players did the rest. Even then i always enjoyed UT more than Quake...
