Well it could be a great number of things. To begin with, maybe you changed your video settings to something more demanding.

You have to enable the console first by typing "-console" in the launch options of hl2. You can get to the options by going Steam>Play Games> right click on Half-Life 2>Properties>Launch Options.

iamharper, i think i know what you are talking about. when you go to steam->play games with your account info, it no longer recognizes that you own hl2, and when you try to register your cd key as if you were doing so for the first time, it says that the key is already in use. is this correct?
