lol, actually I fixed it, I found some alienware forceware drivers, 96.98 to be exact, sorted it out completely.

On any source games I have the menu loads fine and as soon as a click one of the options, the screen goes black and the bottom right corner of the screen has a large grey box in it, I can see the pointer and hear its clicking over the menu but cant see anything. anyone know the cause?
