Well lately I have been extremely bored due to no actual good PC games coming out. So I have taken it upon myself out of sheer boredom to write a... well book in a non-booky kind of way. So I have been developing project "ASO," aptly named a study of. Basically what i do is play through the whole of HL2 again and study every possible aspect of it. The protagonists, the enemies, the environments and weapons and see what key details I can get out of them and simply to study them for example as a little try out I have been studying Isaac Kleiner and have drafted his "A Study Of Profile." This is the first draft. If you read it you will see what I mean.

If you want to join me in a spot of Halflifeology, a rare science, then please feel free it would Be best not to do the whole thing alone. :) There is a lot of studying to do. Please read my first draft and tell me what you think. *Puts fingers in ears and prepares for the insults" :P

Pleasen note it is the first draft. :)

Um... it's good that you've got the ambition to try something like this, but haven't you got anything better to do?

While I am certainly a person who appreciates time spent writing elaborate research papers on all things Half-Life, there are a few constructive comments I have.

The first thing is organization, organization, organization. I stress emphasis on that because while you separated the paper into sections, and did a good job on putting the right information into the correct section, the way it's written is kind of disorganized. I can't give specific examples but while reading it it didn't feel cohesive.

While on the topic of organization I find it quite humorous that you gave Kleiner a habitat section. Habitats are usually reserved to describe the dwelling places of animals, not people.

The second thing is, depending on how in-depth you want to go, you might want to give more detail about certain aspects of the good doctor. For example, the history section only briefly covers Black Mesa, and then City 17. What about his time as a professor at MIT? What about the interim post Black Mesa and pre-Gordon Freeman, such as smuggling himself (along with Eli Vance) into City 17? There's a lot of information there.

The third point I have to make is the most critical and MOST IMPORTANT one of all: when you research something, be sure you have sufficient evidence to back it up, and not just opinions or misinformation. I'm sorry to say but I noticed there were some glaring errors in your paper; as of writing this post I've only just skimmed through it but I can point out a few things:

1. Dr. Kleiner does not harbor a "strong hatred for Breen." Dr. Kleiner may not like Dr. Breen, or rather may not like his methods, but I doubt he bears him any ill will. In fact to be honest I doubt Dr. Kleiner concerns himself at all with Dr. Breen, the Combine, or any such external antagonist because he's far too wrapped up in his own work to do so.

He also doesn't reveal much about himself not because of Dr. Breen, but because he's more into describing his theories and building things than talking about himself.

2. On the message board, the drawing to "Uncle Kleiner" was not done by a nephew, it was drawn by a young Alyx Vance. She drew it for him either at Black Mesa or when they were already in City 17.

3. Also on the message board, I believe the magazine was Popular Science or some such, not Wired. Unfortunately my gaming computer is dead and I can't check right now, but I'm almost certain it's Popular Science. I've stared at that message board A LOT. ;)

4. He has never transported any rebels to Eli's lab, with the exception of Alyx. The teleporter wasn't working until the day Gordon Freeman showed up, and it was only used to teleport Alyx. It may have been used to teleport people out of City 17 post-streetwar, just before and after the citadel's reactor blew up, but not to Black Mesa East...it was already destroyed.

5. This isn't an error, more of an oversight, but what about LAMARR?! :p Lamarr's pretty integral to Kleiner, showing his caring personality and that he's not just a nutty professor. He has a pet that he genuinely cares for the well-being of--not to say that he doesn't show affection to people, quite the opposite, but a scientist owning and caring for a pet headcrab? That's a pretty big character point.

You did get some good stuff in there, such as noting the hula girl (although I wonder if that's Dr. Kleiner's or Barney's...), and how he treats his colleagues, he has a good heart, being a bit on the messy side (although he's not really a slob, per se, he just leaves stuff lying around because he doesn't quite care enough to pick it up).

Keep working at it. Make sure you check all your data, come up with theories and opinions that are supported by that data, feel free to ask on here if there's something you want to know or an opinion you have and get feedback on it, but keep working at it. It's always nice to have around other fans of the HL universe who'll spend (waste) their time writing this stuff, so welcome to our very tiny group of "We Have Nothing Better to Do So We Write About Half-Life," the WHNBDSWWAHL.

Thanks Darkside I shall take your wise advice to heart however although I have made some glaring errors you have also. :p

Iti sm ost definitely wired though I shall check again.... Ok then that's all I have got on you. :P

And as for Lamarr she has a section of her own, she deserves one. Why should she be ditched with old baldy. Remember t was the first draft also I knew i had some errors that I was going to correct. :) However you have pointed out some thins that I had not noticed so thank you for that. :)

You are experienced in this area as I know so I won't doubt you. :)

Edit: We were both wrong, but you were darn closer. It was popular scientist. :D

Lamarr DOES deserve her own section, you're right. Isaac Kleiner isn't nearly as interesting. ;)

And yeah, everyone makes errors, don't worry about it. That's what makes the speculating fun, because everyone has opinions and theories and its up to them to prove them right (and others to prove them wrong). I know I've made some errors in my posts before...I had to change my sig one time because of it.
(My sig at the time was, "The one man who knows everything")

Anyway it's all practice and imagination and countless hours of boring research that no one else will do. So like I said keep at it, and have fun with it.

I am. I still feel a feeling of gladness that I have people like you to watch a fellow researchers back. I will give you Eli's study soon as I have been working on it for the last couple of hours. :)

You should add 'sexy' in his physical traits.

I think it's a nice idea, I know worse things to do when you've nothing to do.

I am hopefully going to build a site with the program using freeway 4 pro named halflifeology. I will edit this post with a potential banner I made for the site. I think it's brilliant actually but then again I would wouldn't I?

And put sexy into his traits... well I suppose if your into the bald, squeaky, annoying to the player character kind of thing. :D

Please feel free to make a better banner however :)

Old + bald = ooh lala! :P

The banner is nice, I like the reflection, but couldn't you find a more up-to-date picture of Gordon?

Aren't there already sites that does exactly what you are doing

Your point being. It's better to do it yourself as you can speculate so much more. Plus it'll be a personal sanctuary for me. Just so you know Darkside has agreed to help me and with his knowledge of the Half Life universe I feel that it might become something special.. I'm going to need it. :) You could say that aren't there so many forums that do the same as www.halflife2.net couldn't you? Nobody seems to complain about that... Well not people here. ;)

I give you a week max before you cant be arsed anymore :P

I give you a week max before you cant be arsed anymore :P

Fair play my friend, fair play. We shall see though. :P

But I must war you don't get...

*wanders off to play with a piece of string*

Oh right... ;)
