Is it just me or is the opening of EP1 with all the debri swirling around and Breen talking a reference to the end of Akira?

(for /\/008s who don't know what Akira is it was one of the anime film's in the 80's that made anime what it is today)

No.
Pure Valve, what gave you that idea.
*starts the deneuralizer*

lawlz so it is an Akira reference coolz. *puts sunglass on*

So I'm a noob cause I didn't know about something in a film 20 years ago?

Neither do I, but I know what hes talking about and it looks nothing like it...

Its simply a swirl of energy preparing to rip a hole in the dimension to transport a message offworld, thats it, it just attracts clouds thats all, not debris...

Anime loves white voids which prematurely wrap up already incomprehensible stories. They're cheap to animate for starters. Doesn't mean that Black Voids that act as 'previously on(s)' in American made video games are anything to do with them.

I'd strongly contest that Akira has had any significant influence on Anime, save for the limited market models of US and UK anime/manga distribution in the 90s (ultra-violence and sci-fi for teenage males). Which is good, because apart from the impressive technical achievements of the film (which were a dead-end, since no one does pen and paint 2D animation any more) and the soundtrack (which is bizarre and one-off) it's actually a pile of sweaty pre-pubescent balls where 90% of the dialogue consists of people pointing at each other and shouting each other's names.

KANEEEDDDAAAA!!!!
TEETTSSSUUOOO!!!!!
etc.

BTW, the one confirmed Anime influence in Valve land, according to Raising the Bar: 'Early Combine helmet design was influenced by the work of Hayao Miyazaki'. I've never quite understood how the design it's paired with (pg. 108) is Miyazaki like, but whatever.

Oh, I checked that page out. I can see the influence. Very smooth curves.
