then they see a vote site, and they spam tons of HALO forums to all vote HALO 1 and 2 and they all spend about an hour voting on different accounts/computers

All the "Best X ever" should be taken with a grain of salt. The surveys concluded among people in a magazine are the opinion of that magazine, which can often be more or less a good indication. Surveys concluded among experts (in the case of games it would be game designers) would also be more or less an indication. However, any public surveys like this are only indicative of the size of the fanbase and the fanaticism level, maybe, nothing more.

Just consider the issue of popularity. There are strategy games. Among strategy games there are titles that are recognized as being absolutely great - like Civilization for TBS and Starcraft for RTS. Genre fans agree on that, reviewers agree on that. However, the overall number of strategy players is smaller than that of RTS or FPS players - which is why you're more likely to see Final Fantasy, Halo or Half-Life topping such lists.

Yeah, it's pretty similar here. About 4/5 of the people have never even heard of Half-Life, but the other 5th is the same. In fact, I've been called a shit-head.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I just saw Zelda Ocarina of Time for the N64 as number one on the list................................ :|
