A couple of days back I downloaded Ascendancy, the old turn based strategy game from abandonia.com. From what I've heard, it's supposed to be too easy because of the shitty AI, so I also downloaded the Antagonizer AI patch. The problem is that without the patch, the game is unplayable, but while I was playing with the patch, I got clobbered! ;(

What am I missing here? I've finished Alpha Centauri (a pretty challenging game, IMO) many times on various difficulties, so why am I struggling with a 12 year old game infamous for it's lack of difficulty?

The main problem is that as soon as I colonize a few systems and build ships, I send them out to explore, but then every faction wages war on me and takes my colonies (so I lose those ships I worked so hard for). And once I've lost the ships, it's very hard to take the colonies back. I also have no idea about the tech tree - I read a game guide every now and then, but for the most part I'm flying blind.

If any of you has played this game before, a few pointers would be appreciated. How do I hold on to new colonies and explore the galaxy? And what are the most important branches on the tech tree?
