They didnt...someone made a fake .nfo file with the ATI logo on it...they also did it for HL2

I doubt it.

This is because Gabe said there was evidence of someone accessing his computer without his permission. I doubt ATi would hack Valve just to release the source code (which would accomplish nothing, destroy the partnership between themselves and Valve if found out, and Valve would most likely sue them).
