Can't Play Anything, Thanks to Steam..

I start up Steam, and all it does is search for updates for my games.. I have Counter-Strike Source, HL2, and HL2 SMOD, and thats it. I left it on for an hour and it didn't do anything different.. I was playing CS about a month ago (last time I started Steam).

I have dial-up, so would whatever is happening just be really big? Dial-up never has been a problem on Steam (I have CS, and I play it on dial-up..). So I have 2 games, 1 mod for a game, why is it taking so long to search for updates? I just want to play HL2, and install ol' GMOD 9 (haven't played GMOD in forever!).
