i have just started doing some low polly characher modeling and basicly want some tips and crits on what i have done so far and just to general help me in modeling charachers.

each section started off as an 8 sided cylinder then i have move them around to get the general shapes of the sections
i have yet to start work on the arms and legs to get the proportions right etc.
my concent at the monet is were i have attaced the legs to the groin it seems abit flat so any help improving this would be great.

also any tips and stuff for making a decent model or even some tutorials would be good thanx

I think your going to have to work on it a little more to give some proper critique.

But here goes.

1. He needs some pecks, and if what I think are the ribs are supposed to be the pecks they need to be wayyyyyy higher up.

2. The crotch seems like to comes to one seam, this is a bad idea for proper deformation at least have two seams going down between the legs.

3. It's a bad angle but it seems like he is pushing his ass way out behind him and leaning his torso in front into an impossible stance.

4. Arm: Bicept way too long and shoulder is looking really weird and way out to far.

5. The legs don't look bad but around the top of them it looks you have a weird silhouette going on. It's the right shape but those curves need to be way up hire around the butt.

Try that and whatever you else you've worked on inbetween this; also if you're using max, stop it, it blows. hehehe.

this looks like early stuff

if you guys know anthing about character modelling , you'll know that this is exactley how you must start the mesh, im sure more pics will be posted later as it develops, for god sakes, he's only got the legs torso and an arm done people :dozey: ,. let him work,, im sure it will look great as you tweak the mesh, and smooth and attach , are you going to rig the character as an animateable? or is it just going to be a static mesh? :)

aint really done ne rigging befor this is really the start of my learning towards the hole character thing so your gunna have to bare with me hehe

ahh i think im getting the hang of this slightly hehe i have just started to use this like a test dummy now hehe and just fiddling round with it (sounds abit dirty) but you know what i mean

Some good tips:
Spend alot of time on pieces like hands, feet etc. Then re use them on another model. No one will know the difference, and if they look good who cares.
As far as modelling the body it looks like your on the right track, the secret is really just tweaking and tweaking and tweaking edges and verts until you get the right shape.
Focus on the silohuette (sp?) it is the most important part of any low poly model, get it down then you can focus on detail later.
Try working in facets instead of smooth, you can alternate between the two to check your progress but facets will help you see where you need to turn edges, and move verts a lot better.
Use references always, don't try to just jump in and freehand a model, you won't get the proportions right 99 percent of the time and you'll just get frustrated and have to restart, thus just wasting time.
And keep practicing, work the same model over two or three times until you get really comfortable. Then try new tools to see if you can speed up your progress.
Edge loops are key (most of the time) however in low poly modelling a quad and tri mix isn't always a bad thing. Do some research on edge loops (they also help animation)...
And no matter how lame they are, do the tuts that come with the program, you'll learn whats what so much quicker this way.

Could you share those ref pics your using? :)

yea i am modeling in faces it just renderd that way :o bit annoying but i stuck on smooth and told it not to smooth and the faces cam out on another render i did :P

its just a pic of the average man i got one from fround as will
