I got an email from steam support telling me to disable it in order to possibly correct a display problem, but I don't know how. Can anyone tell me how to disable the ATI Smart AI? I have an ATI Radeon 9250 256 MB DDRAM PCI Video Card.

the in game ai? well thats...
sv_cheats 1
ai_disable
edit: oh you mean something else? dont worry about mine then.

If you have the Catalyst Control Center:
Click 3D ----> Click Catalyst AI.

If you don't have the Catalyst Control Center, than I'd suggest finding out how to at www.ati.com

I don't have the Catalyst Control Panel because that won't work with the 9250 Radeon Series, and I've tried searching in ati.com but I can't find anything.

because customer help is disabled until jan 3rd (THANK YOU HOLIDAY VACATIONS :@).

Then I suggest you make a new post in the Hardware forum. I'm sure there will be more help for you over there.
If that doesn't help, use google and look up some hardware-geek-forum.

Download ATiTrayTools (http://www.radeon2***/atitray/), you can set AI in there.

will downloading this solve my problem, and is it safe? don't want my pc screwing up in the middle of something.

Goto your Administrative tools Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services and click on services. In the right window you will find ATI Smart. Set it to disabled. Reboot. y/w...:)

bull.
start-run-regedit-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\{F61B01D8-B481-4C6A-A2BB-721F4107C4B6}\0000-catalystai, set it to 0

note:\ means go to, like-
also F61B01D8-B481-4C6A-A2BB-721F4107C4B6 may be something else under video, there may be many, leftover from previous drivers

I fixed it, and it wasn't what the Steam Support said it was. I degraded the Catalyst drivers I had (4.12) and installed the previous which was in the CDROM that I got with my Radeon 9250 purchase and it works perfectly. It seems that the 4.12 drivers don't work perfectly.

No 4.11 brought Cataylst AI, and then you probably never got those.
Now catalyst AI does is decide when you wont notice a diffrence between trillian and billnear and then switch it so you will get better performance.

To do this all you had to do was: Right click on desktop, click proporites, settings, advanced and on the one the buttons you would find cataylst AI, most likly advanced 3d or something. Disable it, and there ya go. that is all you had to do, would have only taken a minute. Also lowering to a lower driver might make things go slower.

So really what they said was right. And you did fix it. By getting a new driver you made it so cataylst AI is unknown to those drivers. Thus they don't have it. Thus it's technically disabled. So really you just got rid of cataylst AI, plus performance benifets.

I already tried shutting off the Smart AI but it didn't solve the problem. Degrading the driver has done it for me and it works perfectly. :D!

It's very safe, its just a tiny little frontend for every option apropriate to an ATi card.

Most of it just changes registry keys.
