in Half life 1 in the Beggining sequence it says that Gordon Freeman's Disaster Response Priority is discretionary. does anyone know what this means?

What i think: Disaster response priority= how important gordon is to rescue in the event of an emergency.
- Discretionary= optional.

Lemme know if u have any thoughts on this. :borg:

It means that in the event of an emergency, its up to whoevers handling the situation to decide if its worth saving gordon, its up to their discretion.
As opposed to trying to save everyone, its a BMRF policy that its ok to let certain people die if need be

It always struck me differently - they're not going to tell you "we'll get you if it's convenient" after all.

I thought it meant his response to disasters was discretionary - that is, he didn't have a specific place to go help people, perhaps set up aid stations or such. Others may have had specified locations in important areas where they would be expected to assist if possible. Since his response priority was discretionary, he would choose when and where to help, if at all.

both seem valid, at first look i thought this may have been an over looked clue into the mysterious forces that guide Gordan into these situations.

- i thought that maybe it ment it was up to the discretion of those who "control" Gordan whether or not to secure him in a time of severe evergency.

I don't think so, the word "priority" doesn't fit in here.

Bliink that is a good idea, but this may make more sense:

I think it means that some scientists have specific "priorites" in the event of any emergency, things they MUST do before they do anything else. Gordon's disaster response priortiy is different, in that what he does is completely up to him, it is "discretionary" in that whatver needs to be done, Gordon should do.

That means... he has no valid objective or his objectives are random? :afro:

Perhaps more along the lines that, say, a supervisor is responsible for the safe evacuation of all his personnel, or a technician responsible for trying to bring the communications system back online (presuming a disaster downed them in the first place), while staff with no real crisis training (i.e., a scientist) are left to do the obvious.

Alternately we're looking too far into this- although its possible the priorities are literal objectives (almost implying that they expected such an extreme situation) its more likely they're just throwaway identifiers, although undoubtedly Gordon's own information is integral to the Gman's manipulation of his actions.
