Energy beams, or something like that...

Hello, I'm relatively new to mapping and after seeing the energy streams in Episode 1 and Metastasis I wanted to put one in a map.

The kind of beam in Metastasis I'm on about is the 'energy download shaft' that is in the centre of the island. In episode one I'm on about the ones that spawn energy balls in the reactor chamber.

Unfortunately I don't know how to do this and I can't find any tutorials that explain how to set it up. I have already tried making a 'sprite' emitter and chose the 'physgun' sprite but it didn't work after compiling and running the map. Although I didn't know how to set everything up so I just created it and moved it to the position I wanted.

So if anybody knows of a tutorial could you please give me a link, or tell me how to do it, thanks.
 
There is one in prefabs hl2 I believe. It might not be exactly what your looking for, but having that to look at and take apart is probably the best "tutorial."

just identify the relevant citadel map, decompile it with vmex, and see how it works

actually, the words PLEASE FIND OUT HOW VALVE DID IT BEFORE ASKING HERE would make a useful addition to any 'how to post here' sticky
