Why is it that whenever i am joining a multiplayer game, regardless of whether is it HL-2 Deathmatch or CS:S, my PC will always start to download files etc map files (.bsp, mp3) before i could join the online game or server.

Also by downloading lot of multiplayer maps from Filefront or wherever, doesn't it help to shorten my connection/joining time when i try to join a server/online game? I mean let say server is playing CS:S map - dust02.bsp then if i happen to have dust02.bsp map files inside my CS:S map folder, do my PC still go on to downloading dust02.bsp from the server i am going to join or will it be able to auto detect the existence of dust02.bsp map files in my CS:S folder and let me straight into the online game??:frown:

You have to have the map before you can play it. And no, if you have the bsp already in your maps folder you will not have to redownload it.

Is it downloading stock maps or just custom maps? Like dm_steamlab, dm_lockdown, dm_powerhouse, cs_office, de_dust, etc., are all stock maps and it shouldn't be downloading those. If they are custom maps then yes of course you have to download them from the server before you can play it.

Yes it should detect the presence of the map and not download it if it's already there. If it repeatedly downloads the same map then something's not right.

Means if i already have the custom maps downloaded beforehand in my cs:s maps folder, then if i happen to join one server which is hosting the custom maps which i had in my cs:s map folder, then my connecting PC doesn't need to re-download it again ?
