anyone know why i get a hammer.exe error when i start hammer up?

If you're loading the programs from the Source SDK dialogue box, try directly opening their executables, and vice versa.

btw,i only got this error after i reinstalled steam.

It was me who got the same error after a virus attack and a reinstall of steam. What solved it for me was that I upgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 2.

If that doesn't do the trick for you, or if you have SP2 already then try running the actual game that you are trying to map for and ofcourse do what rae said..
