so i figured id give the new garrys mod a try. played it for like 5 mins. decided to play HL2....wont run. it just says preparing to play HL2....and it seems to want to open up the window for the game...and then it just instantly crashes. same with HL2DM and CSS.

lost coast and HL1 etc work fine.

this is total crap. i reinstalled HL2 and it still wont launch. i notice i cant even get rid of garrys mod either. this is really pissin me off. restarted a bunch of times....lowered the clock speeds on my gfx card...still nothin. anyone know of a fix?

Just delete the Garry's mod folder in Steam/Steamapps/Sourcemods.
Then restart your computer.

i uninstalled all of my games and steam and my vid card drivers. deleted all the remaining game folders after uninstall except the ones that i wanted to keep...i moved those to the desktop (temporarily). also deleted any registry keys that contained the words 'valve' or 'steam'.

overkill i admit....but at least im getting rid of all reasonable cause for it to not work (at least i hope).

Way to go.
That sure is rather kill, kill than overkill, but I think registry does delete itself off of a nonexistent programs eftare each reboot.
But I stand to be corrected on that.

there were plenty of reg keys still there after the uninstall. anywho....doing all this did the trick....i even got garrys mod to cooperate. just gotta let all my games download overnight and transfer my maps to their respective folder....after that ill probably be better off than i was.

Not only overkill, but a gigantic waste of time.

You could have done most (if not all) of that in a few swipes, using RegCleaner and crap cleaner.

yeah i knew there was an easier way somehow....but im already done.

Somehow I do hate and distrust Robot cleaners like these Merimaid software.
Registry is a hard and very tedious system to maintain, and lots of registry geeks still get in trouble by doing it so.
So I suggest to manually maintain registry if you absolutely, positively and necessarily have to, and most of all, you have to know what you’re getting into.
And what kind of music you’re going to have to face, if (God forbids) crap hits the ceiling fan.
Cuz I sure hate Opera.
