Half-Life 2 Substance is back!

The 2005 original is available once again, rebuilt and expanded in an all-new 10th Anniversary Edition, thanks to the support of our community and the crews of System Shock Infinite and SMOD Standalone.

Half-Life 2 Substance installer v2.1

This mod harks back to a bygone age, when innovation with first person shooters was king.
Games like Thief, Requiem or Shogo would explore new approaches to the shooter genre.
Substance sought to merge the different playstyles into a precursor to the Crysis suit.

Each of the HEV Suit Modes comes with its own weapons and abilities, like energy shields or cloaking.
Just like multiplayer classes, which can be switched on the fly and share one gigantic inventory.


Newly available in this version, is the VR Missions map pack: as Substance used to be limited to the
vanilla and remastered campaigns, it can now be played in over a hundred Half-Life 2 classic maps
such as Strider Mountain, The Citizen, Rock 24, Riot Act and Mistake of Pythagoras!




To install the mod, place the Half-Life 2 Substance installer in Sourcemods and run it with admin rights.
Note: Half-Life 2 and Source SDK 2006 must be installed, and run at least once before installing.

Dreadlord1337: would you like to customize some enemy skins for the mod? It already hosts the cop + antlionguard by Toby Bamford,and the Alyx + zombie + headcrab by me (just simple recolors actually). I'd give anything for a combine soldier that looks as splinter cell!

That certainly does look impressive.

Some screen shots doo look over the top, interms of introducing things like ant lions and their guards so early into the game, but ofcourse I'd reall have to play it to see if it fits or not.

Nice work.
 
I forgot to mention this is intented for veterans of the SP harder difficulty settings. So? Has anyone tried my work?

The mod progresses at least 1 stage per day: today the 29th and 30th levels are expected. The language update too.

What exactly is it? I can't understand the language.
 
Zeus: exactly what is stated in the first post,the original single player with a new gameplay action filled. Not only: variety,complexity,difficulty are all increased a lot. HL2 is wonderful,don't get me wrong,but I have a taste for action that some chapters couldn't really satisfy... (Ravenholm or the airboat). Anyway,everything is being edited,to make it more beautiful if nothing more. Even people who doesn't have HL2 can try the mod by using its HL2demo-devoted version!

How exactly do you download? Don't really understand what you said in the first post.

I just wish there were an easier way to remove it after installation. Deleting each individual component seems like a pain.

That said, it's a great concept and I look forward to playing it.
 
What I've seen so far, upto Kleiner's lab, looks nice.

One thing though, the Vort's fighting in the streets can kill their opponents. Although not a problem in itself, if the Combine in question is carrying a SMG, then you can pick it up. And because none of the soldiers are in the same squads you can kill them off one by one and no one will lift a finger to stop you.

Also, at the end of the roof chase sequence the Combine failed on every occesion to beat me unconcious. I had to repetedly walk into them until I got a white screen and Alyx came along and saved the day.

I did notice that you've got level transition working now, and everything seems to flow quite well into one another.

It's a great start.
 
Xune: yes,level transition will work soon,I've just to solve the problem of hubs: now that the changelevel transition load savegames instead of maps,when I backtrack from a hub to a previous level it loads a previous save (before it just loaded a previous map) so everything screws up.

The bug of level 4 (combine that do not knock you out) should have been already fixed: I just played the level again and they massacred me - it's something beyond my intervention,sometimes things just don't want to go the right way.

The weapon-picking issues of levels 1-2-3 are all unwanted consequences under strict observation. Exactly where did you experience those? The vortigaunt scene at the station or the one at the square?
 
I any of you guys (with comps much more forward than mine,I'd bet!) would like to pic some screenshots of your favorite moments and vistas in the mod,he/she will be very appreciate and immediately credited :) I have an old geforce,that would make people afraid of the mod! :p
 
level trancitions dont work, it makes me load regular hl2 levels instead :(
 
just finished the whole chapter from 16-28 and I must say its super cool... especially Ravenholm... kinda like Resident Evil.
 
Overwatch: as I said,yeah,I have the code to make level transitions work but do need the help of a modder able to customize the output of a changelevel trigger via the console to pass the problem of hubs. I know how to do it "in theory",now I'm searching for the right command to write in pratice.

Sid Burn: wow,all in a row? I'll update the complete version this sunday,until then the newest levels (the 29th is already out) will be available as single,separate levels. Exactly,the extended comments yet to be translated often quote R.E.

Teta_Bonita: it could have been "Reloaded" but I was afraid people could have read "Revolutions",or "Second Impact" but I liked more the inside joke about MGS.

Ok, I'll have a few more tries at that section, I only did it once.

For some reason I loaded the save that is just past the childrens playground, as you enter the appartment block. So I backtracked to the square where I saw the Vorts and Combine fighting and it was here that I collected the guns. I didn't think to go all the way back to the trainstation.

Sounds like you don't know what a mod is chief ;)
 
Any chance of turning this into a proper mod that installs to ".../SourceApps/SourceMods"? I'd love to check it out, but the installation looks pretty messy.
 
Mountain Mod: burn the estabilishment,this is mod is proud to be a pariah. Anyway,when the hub transitions problem is solved,the sourcemods will be mandatory. If someone can help with the hub transitions problem please contact me!

Xune: level 2,strange,the vortigaunt in that level stands behind a fence and shouldn't be able to hit people on the other side. EDIT: maybe it wasn't the vortigaunt that killed the combine,but friendly crossfire!

Skater: it's normal to be confused,because a mod like this is surely impossible in the real world.
 
When i start a new game i get loaded in the default point insertion level not the modded one.

The only way to get into modded levels seems to be loading saves, and there is no saves for the beginning of point insertion.

Can you please explain in detail how i am supposed to get this to work
 
Me too. And if i go further in the chapters, e see "custom level #15" or something, and that's a new level, but the 15th. So, the first 14 i don't have, just 15/28 (i guess). PLEASE, help me!! :(
 
Migas and Overwatch: copy this .txt file into your hl2\resource directory and tell me if it works. If it does,I'll reupload the 0.29 immediately with this bug-fix.

Do you like them? It's good to add new material to the mod,filling it with rubbish is not.
 
the bugfixed version 0.29 is out: if you have experienced problems with the version 0.28,update your HL2S installation with this.
 
Dreadlord1337: good ideed! I tried fruitlessly to add the third eye,did you? I'll see now if I can find some splintercell-like machinery to add on the torso and/or wrist. happy new year from HL²:Substance! With the help of Dreadlord1337's urban camo skin,I've now a work in progress for the splinter cell combine. The design is definitive,I just have to find better materials to paste on it. It has two more green light points than those seen in the image. Each wrist,hidden on the inside (gotta kil the guy to see it) has a pda that reads "freedom is slavery".
