Hey, does anyone know how to get the sounds from Half-Life 2? Maybe a link, or a way of getting to them?

i head something about a .gcf file that you can get the sounds from. does anyone know how to get to it and how to get the sounds out of it?

theres a program to open up .gcf files

Get GCFscape. Open up the file source sounds.gcf
It's in the Steam Apps folder

is steam open, or even hl2? Something apparently is linked to it and it could be any sort of background resource hl2 related. Kinda obvious maybe, but ive seen ppl miss those sort of things.

Do I need to extract it?

yes, you need to extract the files in order to use them. I assume that error message is just GCFScape saying that it doesn't recognize the files and can't display them properly because it doesn't know what they should be opened with.

That happens when Steam is on. Turn off Steam.

I'm still getting an error when playing back the sounds. The application doesn't recognize it after I extract it.

You may need to uninstall gcfscape, and reinstall it when you have installed the .net framework

Able to extract sounds but can not play them.

I was able to extract the sounds GCFScape with out problems. My problem now is that I can not get windows mwdia player or any 3rd party app to play the MP3 format saying it was created with an unknown codec. Anyone have any ideas on this? All the sound are in .MP3 format but nothing I have will play them. I tried to convert them using EZCDA Extractor but it too says unknown format. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I can just play them using WMP when I double click on them. Try extracing the sounds you want.

Tried version 5.07 of Winamp (WMP)? Still no audio. What I did was extract base_source_shared_sounds file with GCFScape to a dir. The I try to play the mp3 listed and I get either a codec error or from wmp no sound. My sound card does work and winamp does play various sound other than the hl2.

If you extracted the sounds and cannot play them, it's because you extracted the stuff from an encrypted gcf file.
You can extract the stuff only if you actually pay and register HL2, if you only pre-downloaded the HL2 files they keep encrypted untill you buy or register though Steam.

Hey thanks for the help and advise. I figured it out. (Brain Fart) I extracted the the files off the cd and not from the game directory itself. Everything sounds great. Thanks again for everyone's help.
