A single light bulb in a blown out cafe makes it so I the entire room is illuminated and if I look anywhere near the direction of the light source all I see is glare, sure HDR can look great but it seems just slightly overboard. Anyone else know what I mean? It seems to detach me slightly from the realism when I look at a light bulb and it has a blinding glare similar to staring straight into the sun. Other than this I absolutely love DoD:S, it's my only complaint.

ever stared into a bare lightbulb, hurts, I dont think its too excessive, infact I think they got it spot on, turn it off if its bothering you

and btw my HDR is really subtle sure you aint got regular bloom on?

keep playing with HDR on for an hour say, Then turn it off yuck looks much better on.
BTW I turnd my shadow detail from high to low i get better FPS please just try...

HDR makes things look much better. It's very cool, looking into the outside from inside a building and seeing Germans run past while I gun them down.

I do think he has a point, but its not valid while indoors. That bulb should be bright when inside. Although when I was outside facing a warm glowing wall (HDR from sun) a window sits right in front of me with a light in that room which is glowing just as bright. That is very off considering it should be a faint light with the full glow of the sun off the wall. Edit:Here is pic
Just one example. But otherwise HDR is right were it should be IMO. Maybe that will get fixed if they enable dark rooms to dim when you are outside looking in for DOD.

I agree full heartedly. The hdr bloom is way overdone. If it's trying to simulate what the human eye sees/does, it fails. It represents something closer to film, which has something like a dynamic range of 12 f-stops compared to the 30 or so F-stops of a human eye. A weeker bloom would look much more natural and still make the game damn pretty.

I was in class today, and I decided to look outside at a white building through the doorway.

Damn, that shit was bright. I looked back inside of the class, and I had to let my eyes adjust a bit before I could see anything properly.

I looked back outside, and I had to let my eyes adjust a while before the building stopped looking like it was on fire.

So yeah. They got HDR spot on. If you ask me, maybe you don't get out enough.

To no insult. I sometimes spend all day inside.

Lol right on, my life for now consisted of BARELY any time outside ( I still keep a tan, dont ask me how, I dont know, magic?), and the time I was inside it was either homework or nonstop computer time, a.k.a. gaming. Now that I am buying the parts in sig for a new upgrade to my PC, that time that was spent BARELY outside, will be shrunk to NEVER. Lol life is good. :smoking:

Yeah, people who stay inside never notice life's goodies. But to me, I think thats good, cuse when I finally get out I admire life's superior engine to source. Then I see famine, alchoholics, death and retards , I decide that I should stick with the worse source engine where people can respawn. I just don't like sacrificing my sanity for the better looking goodies.

= P

It IS way overdone. I was saying that when I first started seeing screenshots that showed off HDR. The effect is good in theory, but it's just too much. Too much white everywhere. When you go from dark to light in real life, your not blinded by white.... you can see fine, but the brightness hurts your eyes until they adjust. However it's not like everything is blinding white until they adjust... Walk outside right now and test it if you want. Theres no white. As for staring at lightbulbs, the only thing that does is give me a purple image of a lightbulb stuck in my vision when I look away. Staring at a bulb doesn't make everything surrounding it white with glare.

Again, too much WHITE.

No, not at all.
seems just right.
someone post a screen shot of too bright...

the people who think Valve spends all day running around outside are delusional :)
