help needed with blue lasers on the railway/after the mine

So I came out of the black mine, entered the railyard, evil brain sucking spider landed on my head, got the med pack from behinfd the wagon, then under the gantry buildings where the first laser pokes out, scanning the ground ahead. Broke open a box of grenades, lobbed one up through the window and he falls like a sack of spuds onto the track. Not a problem. Further down towards the next set of wagons and another laser scanning the ground. I get nearer, it blows up a barrel, upsetting a wagon of lumber. Door on the right is shut. No matter what I do or where I go, the laser ends up killing me. Am I missing something stupidly obvious here?

It's not a laser, it's a sniper guy!

Just use something for protection.

You can go under or around all the lumber... I think theres a way under it on the left.

Btw, it is a laser, light blue thin beam of light. Maybe you mean there's a sniper rifle on the end of it?

Use cover!

Use the train as cover -- go around the left side of the car with the logs but watch out for a headcrab. Then keep on the left and you'll find a red car that opens up almost directly under the sniper's nest. Use the car as cover and lob another frag up and watch the fireworks

Grab a solid object and learn the pattern of the sniper. Right when he shoots, shot the barrel into the air so the bullet hits it. Then whip out a grenade and chuck it in the window. ;D

It's his little aiming thingy. Presumably, Valve added it to avoid the frustration of having no idea where you were being sniped from. Also provides an interesting effect when the sniper starts destroying all nearby cover.

Simple. Just quickly crawl under the rail car and spilled logs right after a shot is fired, go to the other end, go left, kill head crab, get out from under car and keep next box car between you and sniper, go to the end of that car, throw a grenade up at the sniper window. You should be able to do all this without ever taking a hit, its timing.
