I need help with MODS

I've tried to install two MODS and can not get them to work. I only have the Steam installation of HL2, so not sure I'm putting the MOD programs into the proper directories.

Been trying various directories containing HL2. I used the directory pointed to by the HL2 Shortcut I created with the HL2 install.

Any ideas why none of the MODS work for me, and what I can try to correct this problem?

put the mod (in its own folder) into the steamapps/sourcemods folder then restart steam and it will be listed under third party mods
