no really ! hl2 has not the spirit of hl1 , they have focused so much on the graphics that nothing left for atmosphere and story !
aah what i liked at hl1 was the conflict between humanity and aliens , i also liked the great variety of aliens in hl1, so where did it leave ?
have we seen any aliens in hl2 ???????

... whats about bullsquids , houndeyes, alien grunts etc ... and where the **** was that hydra thingy ?? didnt see it .
there were only 4 kinds of aliens .. headcrabs, vortigaunts, ant lions and barnacles :| ! didnt they say earth is infested by aliens (xenified) ??

Yes you are missing something... let me explain it for you. The "General Spirit" of the original as you so termed it was thus... Half Life 1 raised the bar by introducing plot as a major factor into game play. Most first person shooters were dungeonesque mazes and other boring unoriginal designs... But half life stepped out and changed all that. (while not the first game to do so it was the most successful and therefore revolutionary) Half Life 2 has done something rather similar. Instead of a game based on cheap throwaway pulp fiction plots... they have again elevated the fps to now deal with politically and emotionally charged concepts such as posthumanism. Hl2 deals with subject matter that only "high" art (Novels mostly) has dealt with to date. Of course game play takes center stage just as plot takes center stage in novels... However a well written novel or well designed game will inject these concepts subtly into its structure and sophisticatedly deal with the subject matter without subordinating the plot or in this case game play.

Plans change... as all large scale design concepts do. If a concept doesn't leap beyond its original premise and take on a life of its own.. it might as well be dead on the page. Aliens (while cool in hl1) don't necessarily make for a good game. In this case the transhuman forces were by far much more original and interesting. For the first time in fps history we were given a chance to deal with an cold calculating totally inhuman and impersonal force instead of a shootem up cadre of demons... well it was the first chance to do so in such a well done game anyway.

Eber, i dont recall why you arnt banned yet...you should have been banned long ago.

The reason the Hydra was cut, is because its AI wasnt working properly and it wasnt fun to play against...and if they stuck it in, we'd have you on here with a topic title such as:

"OMFG the hydra is so **** what was the point of it even bieng in the game?"

And seriously, i would have liked to have seen the bullsquid..but i didnt see it anywhere where it cou.ld have fit.

And ultimatley...your going to moan because things like the Alien grunts werent in? Its called to do with the story.

He's definitely is missing something. :p

But really, no aliens in the game? Every single enemy was either some sort of alien or some sort of alien machine.
Even the soldiers are only partly human.

As for the story, I'd bet this is another case of the complainer being easilly confused, rather than a bad plot.

Hooray!

Hmm...this is an interesting remark. Can a plot that "confuses" so many people who are exposed to it really be considered "good"? I mean, isn't a "good" plot really universally understandable?

I'm sorry, but any thread that has the first post of "halflife 2 is shit" may as well say "close me, I'm a troll"
