Is now *really* an excellent time for procreation?

If everyone started breeding immediately, as Dr. Kleiner suggests in Episode One, wouldn't half of the human resistance force (that is, the females, assuming females are still roughly 50% of the human population in the Half-Life 2 universe) gradually become unfit for combat duty due to pregnancy? In fact, more than 50% would be affected since some number of men would have to be assigned to protect the women while they are pregnant and nursing. For the first few months the women could probably still wield a firearm, but once it becomes obvious that they are carrying a child, not only would they begin to have physical difficulty keeping up with the men in combat, but I would think everyone would want to keep them out of harm's way anyway, for the sake of preserving the future generation. With human numbers already so low due to the portal storms and the Combine's brutal occupation, obviously it's important to begin replenishing our numbers, but for that same reason we might not want to just start procreating willy-nilly, since we need all the fighters we can get. Imagine a Half-Life 2 "baby boom" where tens of thousands of children are born at roughly the same time of the year, potentially in the middle of a war, since we don't know if the Combine will have been defeated by then. I think it makes more sense to either A) schedule staggered intercourse over a period of months or years to keep as many females in combat as possible and avoid a single massive "baby boom" crisis which we might not have the medical supplies or housing to deal with, or B) put off reproduction entirely until the Combine threat has been eliminated.

Human beings grow slowly, like trees, and the next generation won't be fit for combat for at least 15 years after they're born. With Gordon Freeman and the rest of the main characters of Half-Life 2 kicking so much butt and inventing new technology in the meantime, the Combine will probably have had it by then! Do we really need to start reproducing RIGHT NOW? Besides, I don't want to see pregnant women in a videogame. It's not the potential for violence that concerns me, it would just really creep me out to think that some guy has spent countless hours modeling them.

I apologize if this has already been discussed, I did a forum search for it and didn't find any in-depth discussion on the topic.

First off, welcome to the forums and no, I don't believe this has been discussed with any depth (or even at all, other than people remarking to the humor of Kleiner's speech and Alyx's responding quote).

While it's true that any female members of the resistance would probably want to hold off on procreation, you have to remember that there were a lot of citizens who were in no way associated with the resistance. For these citizens, both male and female, now would be an excellent time to procreate, as they would not be assisting the resistance in any other capacity. For those few females in the resistance that WOULD like to make babies, I'm sure that they will not be in sufficient enough numbers to cripple the fighting force.

Your idea about reproducing in stages to avoid a baby boom is a really good one. Humans atm really aren't equipped to handle a massive number of infants born; and even before that, all the medical supplies and doctors who will need to give care to the mothers over their terms. Reproduction should definately controlled to equal out with available resources.

But humanity cannot wait to have babies. The combine, for the moment, are stopped. We don't know for how long, but right now we have the opportunity to "get busy." When (if) they return, they might come back in full-force, and we may never get this opportunity again. It is better to try now rather than wait until later.

great insight. i think it is just some sort of comic relief in episode 1.

To be honest I agree with the OP, I think it was just a bit of a throwaway line. The situ in EP1 is (hopefully) about as turbulent as it's going to be in the near future, so probably the present time isn't really an 'excellent time for procreation'. The thing is it is a decent gag and by the time ep2 rolls around the procreation supression field is going to be long forgotten by the player.. so Valve had to get the joke in when they could.

I'll bet most all of the human males were cheering when they heard that message. :naughty:

But we need the babies to fight for us too!

Not everyone is in the resistance.
Wait, how do Vortigaunts reproduce? Surely the supression field would effect them too.

Maybe, but maybe not. Who knows about the vortigaunts...they could reproduce asexually for all we know. We don't even know if they have different sexes.
