Losing Save Game Data

My laptop died on me and I had to get a new one. This means that I lost all of my save game data. How can I get a backup file so I can start where I left off rather than start from the beginning again?

The closest I can think of is to go in C:\Games\Steam\SteamApps\Your Account\half-life 2\hl2\cfg and open config.cfg and change sv_unlockedchapters "<number>" into sv_unlockedchapters "14".

That way you can continue from the chapter where you were.

Or you could try to load the map where you last were into the console, but that requires the knowledge of the mapname you were last at.

One question - do I need to back up the game files to do that or not?
