All the threads about monitors recently reminded me of a question I meant to ask a while ago.

Are there any monitors that have resolutions that exceed the standards for their size? For example, an ordinary 22" monitor is 1680x1050, but if the resolution was 1920×1200, then games would look gorgeous and would rarely require anti-aliasing. Dekstop would be tiny, but that could be amended by setting a smaller resolution for that and using the maximum for games.

You could just sit further away from your monitor.

My desk only has so much room and my arms are only so long. I do lie back on my bed if the game works well with a controller, or if I'm watching a video, but a lot of the time I'm at my desk.

I don't see any 22" LCDs with 1920x1200 resolution.
There are some with 1920x1080 though.

And some 21.5" and 23" screens.

Have you had experience using such a monitor? Because theoretically the image quality should be incredible.

So more pixels per inch means better image quality? There's no difference in perceived image quality if you were sitting far away from a 30" monitor or really close to a 10", if they are running the same resolution. So it's really kind of arbitrary, just get a 24" 1920x1200 and be done with it.

24" is a nice size. I've personally used one and have wanted one since. May get one in a month or two.

I'm getting one between 23" and 25". I think the most important consideration is price, image quality - and to a lesser extent - features. Even a 23" would be nice, since I'm using a 17".

If I had a monitor the same size as my current, was in the same place and displayed a higher resolution then the image image quality would be improved. I don't see how that's disputable.

24" would be no good for me, simply wouldn't fit on the desk. Everything has to be crowded onto there since anything on the floor would be chewed by my rabbit. 23" would be doable, and a quick look over products shows plenty of 23" 16:9 monitors with a 1920x1080 resolution, which sounds pretty.

Yeah that's true, but it's still arbitrary because moving yourself or your monitor a few inches toward or away can make up for the physical size difference.

I really wish I could, I've got it pushed up as far against the wall as it can go. My bed's behind me so I can't move my chair further back either. Wall mounting could be an option, but I'm pretty sure it's plaster and it makes a hollow noise if I knock it so that doesn't seem safe.

Agreed.

Just like anything above 30 FPS is indistinguishable.

Can't tell if serious. Maybe for you. Everyone's perception is a little different. I can easily tell the difference between 30 and 50. Well, when speaking of interlaced anyway.

Progressive scan is much better though (for example 720p, 1080p), so I'm not sure. 1080i (30fps) gives me headaches. It's horribly choppy, especially noticeable during panning (camera moving sideways).

Anyway, this is pretty off topic, sorry. LCD has a fixed refresh rate.

I really like the 1920x1200 resolution too. It's too bad you don't think a 24" screen would fit.

D:
I feel bad if that is your case.
