I did the whole Steam mod creator thing and it created the 3 folders (Maps, Resource, and Scripts) as well as 3 files (lights.rad, gameinfo.txt, and detail.vbsp). I've been searching like crazy and can't seem to find the next steps that I need to take. I now have enough tutorials bookmarked for mapping, but not how to set up my files for total conversion, or even just a little play around mod to see how everything works.

For instance: where do the model/texture files for my mod go? Why doesn't my mod have any maps with it? Do I need to unpack GCFs, copy/paste files?

Okay- I went ahead and extracted all the files that I think I need for a mod, however when I go to play my mod, I get the background load screen where it has the menu and such, but I cannot start a new game due to no maps. The maps were extracted to the Maps folder, why can't I play my mod?

the models, textures etc go in a folder setup which is exactly the same as any other source game's:

maps go in the \maps\ folder
models go in the \models\ folder
textures go in the \materials\ folder

it is illegal to extract .gcf content for your mod.
you need to make your own maps if you want to play them.
you need to use Visual C++ or something like that to actually change the game fro a total conversion.

It's illegal even if I want to just change the models of the single player campaign?

What I read is that you can't officially distribute it as you would sell a product.

For a mod I'm pretty sure it's fine.

Oh okay- Well I'm not making money from anything, just trying to mod something new (to me anyway). I've had HL2 since it came out and I've played alot of excellent mods. Modding Dawn of War is getting boring.

So I have to ask- how do I get it so that I can play the original campaign in my mod. The map files are all there in my mod folder under maps, but yet nothing shows up when I go to start the mod using the main menu of the mod.

are you getting any errors in your console after you click on the chapter you want to play?

That's the problem: none of the chapters show up. Is there a setting I need to change somewhere?

you need to make some .cfg files eg chapter1.cfg and put them in your cfg directory.
the .cfg file should read map <mapname>

Thanks! Is it possible to view those files to see how they are set up?

EDIT- Nevermind. Got it! Thanks again. I'm sure I'll be back asking about model replacements and such...
