When I host on HL2:MP my port keeps randomizing itself and its making it hard for my friends to join. Im creating through a hub and have opened all the necessary ports in my firewall but it keeps randomizing itself. Is there anyway I can set it to stay as 27015 or a port of my choice?

Open Steam.
Right click on "HL2DM"
Click "Create Shortcut"
Goto Desktop
Right click on the shortcut
Select "Properties"
Click on "Shortcut" at the top of the menu.
Where it says "Target"

After Steam.exe -applaunch ***

Add a space then

-port 27015 (or whatever port you wish)

-----------------------------------------------------------

That's from memory as i'm at work, but i think that will force HL2DM to use port 27015

Hope that helps.

Didnt work :(

Well atleast you tried to help unlike half the people in this forum.

Give us more information.

Are we using standard HL2DM to create a game (not dedicated)?

Is it defiantly the port that is changing : ie: 27015 rather than the full ip.(***.***.**.**)

Example of the ports it's changing too.

Any error messages at all?

I'm guessing everything works, it's just annoying that the port is changing, right?

I'm sure you can type port "27016" in the server.cfg file located in the STEAM\APPS\HL2DM - If not, i'm pretty sure you can just create another file and then type EXEC FILENAME.CFG.

Again, still at smegging work, not sure if the above is accurate, but what the hell.

It's has to be a router issue.

Did you open ports in the router itself?

You need to find out what the ip of your computer is inside the network.

Start/run/cmd

type "ipconfig"

Your ip should be something like 192.168.0.3

Then go into your router and find the port forwarding place and set port 27015 to be opened for 192.168.0.3

1. Yes

2. Just the port

3. from around 1000 - 2000

4. Only get error messages when trying to change map when ive been messing around with NPCs on the previous map.

5. Yea

6. Ill Try it later EDIT: Cant find any server configuration files anywhere except for serverconfig.vdf in Steam\SteamApps\#####\half-life 2 deathmatch\hl2mp. And I am going to go and try making a file and putting the port in it.

And Pro[PH] as i said in the first post im using a HUB instead of a Router therefore I cant and dont need to open ports in it.

Hi,

Hmmm. Interesting problem lol. I noticed that i put a minus after the shortcut rather than a +.

Try a plus instead:

"Open Steam.
Right click on "HL2DM"
Click "Create Shortcut"
Goto Desktop
Right click on the shortcut
Select "Properties"
Click on "Shortcut" at the top of the menu.
Where it says "Target"

After Steam.exe -applaunch ***

Add a space then

+port 27015 (or whatever port you wish)"

Didnt work and this time he couldnt even see the server.

Can you give us an idea of how you are doing this?

Are you using cable or dsl?

If you are using cable and run a server on one machine and play using another machine then how do both machines connect to the net? With a hub you will need two cable modems.

If you have dsl and your dsl modem is also a router then things are different.

Usually when the port keeps changing it is because of a firewall issue. Are you sure all firewall issues have been resolved?

I am using cable. I have 1 server computer with the cable modem connected to it then the internet connection is shared between 4 other computers between a hub on a LAN network.

1. What firewall software is installed on the server machine?

2. Do you have two network cards installed on the server machine?

3. Why not get a router and do this a more conventional way? You probably won't have as many problems.

1. Zone Alarm Pro

2. Yes, one for the LAN and one for the Internet

Hmm, a strange one, however i'm assuming your firewall settings are correct.

Perhaps other applications are using the port you are hosting on, therefore forcing Steam to choose another?

What happens if all of the other computers are off and then you host a game? Is it always the same port? Or still random?

What happens if you host on another computer? Perhaps the one with the cablemodem/DSL?

It doesn't sound like an ideal setup, i would recommend a router.

Still a strange problem.

Do you have WinXP firewall enabled as well?

Nope dont think so, not on the pc im hosting on anyway.

Btw Smeg my firewall setiing is on medium so it is not blocking any ports and I couldnt host on the server PC even if i tried because it is a pentium 3 sack of **** that even struggles to start up.

I think the best suggestion for you is getting a router. You will get much better firewall protection anyway.

They way your are doing your network is very unorthodox and I don't see you getting a lot of help around here.

Is there any reason you don't want to use a router? They come pretty cheap these days compared to 3-4 years ago.
