Problem with steam

Starting hammer all by its onsies isn't possible as far as I know. Something to do with a .dll file that's activated through Steam when it fires up, probably put in place as an anti-piracy precaution.
If you wanna try the executable file for yourself, its in C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\yourusername\sourcesdk\bin\hammer.exe
Have you tried starting Steam in offline mode? That's how I survived the dark ages of dial up. Otherwise, try checking your firewall to see if steam's been accidently blocked.
