Problems with Half Life 2 -Console

I have a problem with the HL2 cheat code instructions below...

In order to enter the following passwords you will need to first modify the game shortcut. To do this right-click on the Half-Life 2 icon on your desktop, select Properties and in the properties window add the " -console" parameter (without the quotes) at the end of the target field so it looks similar to this:

"C:/Program Files/Half-Life 2/hl2.exe" -console

...

The HL2 shortcut's Target on my desktop, however, displays:
"C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 220

...contrast to the instructions's Target. Whenever I copy and past the suggested Target example and then loaded the actual game, I could NOT display the console ingame. I hit "~" and nothing happens. Nadda.



Am I doing something wrong? Or is there another parameter or address that I have must punch in? Thanks.

PS. I am afraid with the new updates for Steam, that HL2 cannot be debugged, or am I wrong?

Actually for hl2 theres 2 problems with doing that.

1. It's unnecessary, as in the options menu under "keyboard" if you hit "Advanced" then you see a check that says "Enable Dev Console" and if you click that then you can get into the console.

2. The shortcut code doesn't work for hl2, only hl1.

No one who's able to locate and pirate HL2 is dumb enough to outright say their copy is illegal.

Oh, additional note to the OP once you've followed Van_Halen's advice.

Enter sv_cheats 1 in the console or none of the commands will work.
