In hl2, does the terrain deform, and what about buildings, are they able to be shot with say a rocket and would pices fly off?

probablly; i have seen this in much older games like Red Faction

Yes, terrain can be deformed using displacement maps. Terrain can be shot in, or raise up. You see this in the 2003 e3 video. To what extent you can deform the terrain i'm not entirely sure. As far as buildings, that's up to the map makers. They must define what is breakable and what isn't. If they wanted an entire building to be destructable, then it could be done. However, that might tax heavily on CPU power and slow the player down.

it's not like you'd think it's still much more limited than red faction

I liked the way striders destroyed stuff. :)

And whaT2k... Pendragon's avatar is cooler. ;)

if a building is destructable however, the part of the building you want to destroy has to already be broken apart in the map... if you look at the strider scene in the 2004 e3 videos (although some may argue) the building does break up in exactly the same way.

I'm curious as to how they get the displacement map to animate, and what the limitations are myself.

You can probably set whatever brush in the game engine to be destructible.

ya i remember seeing/reading something about that. gabe said that if you shoot lets say a rocket at the ground from a rocket launcher the ground will deform because of the impact. and yes im sure the same thing goes with buildings.

Not to put anyboy off their stroke but I think we need to underline that its a capability of the Source engine, not necessairly a fully-formed feature. I.e., it'd be more than possible to make Geomod-esque breakable environs, just not practical; doubt we'll be able to break City 17 into pieces.

Cant wait till DoD... lets see how that building will react to my BAZOOKA!
