he let us know that it would be, simply, "this summer." I was hoping to get a bit more out of him, like an exact date, but he did say that Valve would be a little specific at E3.

ign preview (by far my favorite of the bunch that swung around today)

linkage: http://pc.ign.com/articles/512/512580p1.html

lots of other exiteing new info

- IR sniper type gun
- SDK again mentioned to come out around E3 (heres to wishing)

Yep, I am sure as hell hoping they give a specific date at E3. I am betting they will because they are so far along with the game, it's a lot easier to be specific and NOT mess up because they know for sure what needs to be done. Here's to hoping the date comes in the coming days

Doug Lombardi said in the video interview that was released today that it would be "mid-summer" so I'm guessing somewhere in July. Which is perfect because the ATI x800 XT will be released on the 25 of June.

I want a release date, albiet the chaos caused some flamewars, but it sure got me hyped

No offence but seriously, this IGN article (and the info contained inside) is already being duiscussed in 2 or 3 other threads, :(

Also worth mentioning is that the Gamespot preview, how ever degrading it may be, mentions that the crossbow will be making a return in HL2.

the IGN one was certainly more upbeat i thought.
That doesn't mean gamespot isn't credible.
It kept comparing HL2 to other new , hot games, which i can agree with to an extent.

Painkiller is an oldschool twitch games, not story or brain intensive at all.

Farcry is (from what I've picked up) very impressive graphically but difficult and a tad repetitive depending on who you are.

UT2004 is a poor comparison because its predominantly a multiplayer game. HL2 is meant to be an awesome single player game before multiplayer isn't it? Though i wouldn't mind if i were wrong : )

the magazines revealed this already, pretty cool though, im thinking phsyics tricks! w00t pinned a headcrab to a tree

im sorry but painkiller and farcry dont touch the next gen, they skim the surface... the gamelplay in both titles rather you like to admit it or not is nothing near as complex as even the first half-life brought to us, I wish people would stop comparing damned PK and FC to everything. They are far from revolutionary games imo. The gamespot editor seemed to be irked about not haveing the game right away, someone took his rattle, along with fragmasters.

the main problem with Far Cry isn't neccasarily its gameplay but its overly demanding engine. Its demanding on new computers made 2 months ago.

Lobster, oh come on =) its the most news we've received in quite a long time.

we must have played a different game, Far Cry's gameplay was past the original Half-Life's for me.

I really hope the SDK comes out soon. I'm really looking forward to messing around with it.

it what sense, the immersion factor is little to none, the voiceovers are cheesey and make me want to barf, the sp consists of find base blow up kill, repeat and mutants dont change that fact. the mp speaks with the amount of people that play it...

If you compare their merits directly, putting aside graphics and physics (which is still unfair to HL1 anyway) the good action set-pieces of Far Cry were more impressive than the best of HL1 – like the first time you really HAD to use CryVision against those shield bearing elites, the gunship ambushes, vehicle fights, the sniper level before Crowe leaves in the heli and the full war of the mercs versus Trigents outside etc. The AI also had a few more tricks, though was less consistent than HL1's. But apart from that, the cohesiveness of HL1’s unfolding, its varied gameplay, its style and story continuity were all significantly better.

Just compare the two introductions. HL1 where you were immediately immersed - a huge science complex of which you were another PhD employee late for work - lulling you right into the world with non-hostile NPCs and believable level design; right before catastrophe strikes. Then you are at the centre of this survival horror epic and your experience of trying to get out forms the ‘story’. Compare that to Far Cry where you get a disjointed intro the equivalent of a lame text file – thrown onto this island. From there the ‘flow’ and characters don’t get any better through the whole game, and is particularly lame in Far Cry’s attempts at ‘plot twists’ which just come off as a forced nonsensical excuse for more violence and another ‘boss’.

I thought that it was pretty sad that even though they limited themselves to a very basic cliché story (like HL1 but a little worse) they couldn't even deliver that with any decent kind of flow, continuity or flourish.

"where are you....where did you go?...What happened here?...Did you hear that?...Do you see him?... I can't see him... Where did he go?"

Then finally the AI in Far-Cry realises you are standing in front of him shooting his mate in the face.
