does anyone know how to change hl2 resolution outside of the game, for some reason the reasolution is so high i can't see anything, the screen is black.

Your best bet is to go to the Play Games window of steam and right click the hl2 icon.
Go to properties and a window will pop up, then click the 'launch options' button and in the input box you should put this:
Then once you are in game change the resolution to whatever you are comfortable with, and delete what you put in the launch options (otherwise you will always launch with that resolution).
