Screen goes black when I minimize

Just a general question: Whenever I minimize my game screen it's black when I return. I can still hear all the sounds, including the menu ones if i happen to hit esc, but thres no video at all. I have to use endtask to close the game and start over. This only happens during any steam game, whether it be HL2 or regular CS. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

To be fair, I don't think many games support minimising or Alt-Tabbing, are you that desperate to do something else while playing a game?
