"Carbon stars with ancient satellites colonized by sentient fungi. Gas giants inhabited by vast meteorological intelligences. Worlds stretched thin across the membranes where dimensions intersect"

I thought this quote was quite funny, but what is Breen talking about? Perhaps these are references/quotes from different sci-fi novels?

A google search for "Sentient Fungi", for example, brings up a lot of interesting results.

the knowledge to be gained by joining the Combine.."ALL the secrets of the universe at our fingertips" kind of crap..

I think it was in reference to things the Combine had told Breen and Breen was trying to sway Eli's beliefs

What about all the little creatures on Xen? Some of them fit the description.

I think it sounds like some kind of description of XEN.

It sounds like three different worlds that the combine control or, at least, that they have shown him in exchange for his compliance.

The last one, the "world stretched thin across the membranes where dimensions intersect", is almost definitely Xen.

One is a planet like Jupiter, inhabited by giant aliens that are actually made out of weather. The other is a solar system owned entirely by bacteria, orbiting around a huge chunk of flaming nuclear charcoal.

The idea of all this crazy stuff reminds me of the guy's short speech at the end of Blade Runner.

I was wondering about that speech too and then eli brought up something about evil and genocide then saw you and stopped.

Imho , "sentient fungi" just about sums up alot of the more juvenile posters on this site.

wow napalm, I'd like to think I know a bit about WH but I didn't know the tau were fungi, had to google it :{
hmmmmm
SAJ: ahahahaha
mechagodzilla: "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die."

Similar tone to Rutguer Hauer's end Quote on Blade runner, you know the one "I've seen starships on fire of the shoulders of Orion , C-beams glittering in..." only with less pathos...

An H.P. Lovecraft story called "the Whisperer in the Darkness" involves sentient fungi.... one of his best too... highly recommended.
Btw… I didn’t think the quote was silly… I liked it a lot. Had it as my sig for awhile. Lower animal life forms like sponges appear to have evolved from fungus rather then plants also… so fungi are kind of our progenitors.

Yeah, I think that's where it comes from because in some of his interviews, Marc Laidlaw mentions Lovecraft as one of his many inspirations and influences.

The whole point I think of this part of Breen's speech is partly his attempt to bring Eli on side by appealing to him as a Scientist (i.e thirst for knowledge, new lands to explore, discoveries to make). But as well I think it's to alert the player that maybe we shouldn't be thinking of the combine as just your standard alien. Although they're certainly more than that already.
