I don't know if this is just my computer or what. The game freezes in the exact same spot on the first level of Episode one. Just when I got around a corner in the Citadel. I've unistalled the game tried agian but to no avail. Can anyone help me?

I had the same problem the last time I started to play through Episode 1. Some things you can try include turning off autosaves, defragging, trying a different set of graphics drivers, and, if you have a Radeon, turning off fast writes and reducing the AGP speed from 8x to 4x (there will be a mild performance hit).

To test, make a quicksave just before the freeze. Is it just after the car ride, when you enter the first big open space and Alyx makes a comment? I froze a lot there. Defragging, poking my graphics card and fiddling with sv_autosave 0 is what may have fixed it, I think.
Incidentally:
Do you play Episode 1 using Steam?
What part his post makes you suspect in any way that this is a problem with a pirated copy, rather than the extremely common Source engine freezing bug...? Lay off the paranoia, people, christ...

Isn't there a patch I could download? As to where it freezes I'm not exactly sure. You got past this huge room/cavern thing go into a tunnel where you have to crawl to get past a part of it at the end you take a right and it just freezes. Oh I do use a ATI video card btw.

All patches are automatically downloaded and applied through Steam, so there is nothing you can do in that respect, short of making sure that Ep1 is fully updated in Steam.

Make sure all your drivers are fully up to date, or if they already are, try a different set of slightly older graphics drivers.

Edit: can't really go wrong with the latest omega drivers at http://www.omegadrivers.net/

Maybe if you load the next area of the map manually, it will completely bypass the problem. However, you do skip a little of the game.

It's worse now. I uninstalled the game and reinstalled it. Now it won't go past the loading screen. It hits 11 or so bars and just stops. I have verified the game, put lower graphic settings, etc. Anything else I can try?

i havnt had any of that, sometimes i get weird lag for no reason, some days its good, some days it lags, i have no idea why (w8 it used to)
but i have found a big glitch, you know on the menu for ep1, with the screen looking up at the citadel and peices falling off it, if you look to the right you can see through the citadel walls, a screeny would be nice.

Try forcing DirectX level to 80 (in the Console, type "mat_dxlevel 80" without the quotes) and then start a new game.

It's not a real solution, but it may help you.
