I've had a really bad run with Steam...first off, it took me 5 hours to install (i realise this is my fault for trying to install it on a 28.8k modem

Then offline mode refused to work. So (using my 28.8k modem running at 14.4k) i managed to update it nd get half life 2 working in offline mode. I still can't get css working in offline mode, it says that it has aquired 98% of the files. but then i can't get the rest, even after fiddling with the firewall and every other option available to mankind.
But when i loaded steam yesterday, it decided to do an update (of steam, not a game). I presumed that this was the rumored december update. however, this update got to 56% and then started again. so i disconnected it, and gave up. the only problem is that now offline mode won't work. it says that there is "no offline login information stored on this computer".
has anybody else had this problem? i'm getting broadband in about a week, so should i just forget about it til then?
