Steam off line

Having got myself the HL2 E1 game I find my Steam programe will not recognize when I am connected to the net, any suggestions on how to get round this problem?

Have you tried turnin' it off and on again?

How long has it been happening?

I have tried closing steam a few times and starting it up again but it stil will not recognize a net connection.
I have not connected to steam for several months so I don't know if the problem started some time ago.

Have you changed ANYTHING about your internet connection in that time?
And have you tried restarting the computer?

Hi reginald no I have not changed anything about my net connection, when I get home I will try a reboot and see if that helps. I am sure it is something simple that perhaps I have overlooked which is causing the problem. Anyway thanks for your suggestions.
