OK, this is annoying!

I bought HL2 on the 16th November, connected my computer up to the internet, validated the copy, made sure offline mode worked and took my computer back to it's original place.

The game has been running fine, no problems whatsoever and I have completed it 2 times, BUT!! Yesterday when I tried to load up HL2, steam refused to work because "i had no login information stored on my computer", even though it had been running in offline mode for the past month. Now I can't start offline mode unless I connect my computer back up to the internet, which is gonna be hard since it was a freinds connection.

Any Help??

steam DEMANDS that you connect to the internet from time to time.

if you don't it deletes your offline files.

and that is what happened to you.

conclusion:

connect to the internet, let steam download all the updates and offline mode will work again (for less than a month)

hope that helped!

Got this as well. Let Steam do the download, went through the online startup, went offline, now it say "Game not available in offline mode" As we only have dialup and no chance of getting broadband, this is a major pain.
I've tried to get the thing going twice offline, but no luck. It worked perfectly in offline mode before. I'd like to manually logout from Steam and log in again while asking it to remember my password anew in case this is the problem, but can't see any way of doing this at it logs in automatically. This update seems to be causing a lot of problems for offline mode.
Ideas anyone?

Oh this just sucks!! I thought Valve stated that you only need to connect to the internet once!!! :frown: :frown:

There was no mention of this deleting files!! :flame: :flame:

i had exactly the same prob., and still do. mine is out of action 'til i can fix it. but i'm getting broadband on friday, so i'll be able to fix it then.

Ok, this is the latest. When it first downloaded the update it said only 99%. After the game ran twice while online this was 100%. Restart the computer and all is ok offline. Now it runs ok, but sometimes still says the game is unavailable offline but HL2 is highlighted and it runs ok. Seems there might be a problem with the update somewhere that is causing this.

I had just the same thing happen to me and by the way using broadband as opposed to dial up is not the answer to this problem. Just takes a bit longer to download the updates.

One of the threads in this section is worth checking out the title is "offline explained" read through this as one of the moderators (sorry can't remember which one) has given simple details of how to play offline after the updates have been downloaded.

To help anyone what I did was to run steam on line then open up the HL2 game to play, waited for steam to tell me the game was ready to play. Using the steam Icon in the system tray loged out of steam shut the computer down and reboot.

Found I could play off line again and did not need to put the DVD in the drive to play. Hope this helps.

don't think i suck at computers but.. i can't play HL2 in offline mode so i just go onto the internet every time i wanna play.

That really sucks.. fortunately I'm able to always play in online mode..

Playing offline

I just finished reading something at another site that said by going to your HalfLife 2 directory where HL2.exe is, just create a shortcut to this file, and place -steam after it.

eg: hl2.exe -steam

This is suppose to allow you to play offline. Not sure, I'm going to go home, and try this....

The unfortunate part is that I can't get the patch....

My friend here wants on, so I guess I had better get off.

bye for now.

Sorry, this did not work for me :(

Just got an error message saying some crap about steam

hasn't this issue been fixed in some recent update? if i remember right it said something like "fixed offline mode only working for a limited time".. or something similar. so you should have to update just once more and be settled.
don't quote me on that though.
good luck mate!

Yeh, just saw it over at the steam forums, they have fixed this problem in the latest update, thankfully. But I still have to connect to the internet and download ALL other updates as well as I have been using steam in offline mode for the past month!! :flame: :flame:

i sometimes get: steam error the game is not available at the moment
try another time and when i hover my mouse i see steam updating
yesterday it was at 44% today 45% ...
