ok, we all know that steam is needed to play valves games, online and offline.
What if one day valve went bust and they had to shut down their steam servers?
How would we be able to play their games?

You can still play them in offline mode. Plus other companies are going to get involved with steam, not just valve. I think its really unlikely that valve would go bust tho.

For the SP part of HL2 you will not need Steam save for the initial activation Download and any other new material they release.

STEAM is just there so you can play multiplayer games. Its like WON. You could play CS 1.5 with or without WON. But you couldn't play against other people without WON.

In the long run I'm not too bothered (regardless of what my signature says); it's a one-time connection to a verification server, but I hope to heck that Steam is running perfectly come the 16th November... if I can't authorise my copy I'll probably cry.

Your steam account could get hacked and all your games gone.
which is why I prefer the old "buy games from a store so they can only be stolen if someone breaks into my house and steals them" method of getting games.
