when i try to start the first chapter it tells me something along the lines of "map version 00, expected 19 !" and then crashes to desktop.

sounds more like it's hl2's fault, the engine looks for a certain version of the map but doesn't find it :/

Works for me. Sorry to hear your having problems. Worse case scenario is youll have to redownload it. Even if you have to do that, its well worth it, this game is absolutely beautifull!!

Make sure it's fully loaded. Right click on the Steam icon and choose monitor. Make sure it says 100% beside Half-life 2 before you play!

Mine is playing fine, but I sympathise with those whose isn't, I would be mega pissed if after this long a wait the thing didn't work.

wait, it had downloaded and everything, but i think it fuxed up in the unlocking... when i open the HL2 folder, it just has an empty map folder...

Try restarting Steam; it'll then start to unlock HL2.
