Wierd Gold Source problem

I've just installed HL on my laptop, I have before, and I had this same problem. there are many missing letters, in steam and in the menu. I installed CS to see if that worked, and it didn't. I verified Game Cache, and defraged the files. I don't really know what to do. Here's what CS looks like in the main menu:

It does it in game in each Gold Source game also. I tried They Hunger and the letters in game before you get out of prison were also missing fragments

Gold Source is the HL1 engine.
Make sure your running it under Open GL and not D3D. That setting might have got changed.
