This is from over a year ago, but seems to still be true.

Hi Chris,

The distribution method of the SDK hasn't been decided yet, but it will
likely be available as a file download through Steam as well as from various
websites (sort of like with the Half-Life 2 E3 videos recently released
through Steam and various sites).

XSI will be part of the SDK package, though it isn't clear yet if it will be
released together or separately.

Learning XSI in school? Seems there's hope for our education systems
afterall. :)

Chris.

I have a quick question about the SDK. Does it come with the game or do you
download it off of steam or something of the sort? Also is it true that a
version of SoftImage XSI will be included because I have been learning it in
a special class at my highschool, and being able to make things in HL2 with
it would be heaven. Thank you and the HL2 team, I wish that other companies
in the industry were more like you guys. :)

You can do this now with Source as it can have as many hitboxes as you'd like. As for per-pixel deformation, you'd need to add the code to do this yourself.

Hi Rick,

I’ve got a question for you.

How hard would it be to implement a SOF2 style damage system with limbs that can be blown off and such? Would hit-boxes still work or would per-pixel damage be necessary? Also could you do a per-pixel deformation on the models too? Like a bullet goes into the skull of a target and comes out the other side, and there are 2 holes (with the exit wound being much larger.) How much work would have to be done to get these effects?

Thanks in advance. Keep up the good work!

BTW How close are you guys to going gold? (Just thought it’d be worth a try.)

We have been focusing on optimization a fair amount in the past couple
of weeks, so it's quite possible that you saw the benefit of this work.

The VST is actually a way to measure the performance of the Source
engine's rendering pipeline, not how Half-Life 2 will perform. Half-Life
2 will use a number of the visual effects you see in the test (and a
number that aren't represented), as well as a number of other subsystems
like AI, physics, and sound spatialization to name a few.

While I'm super happy to hear that we've sped up the game for you, I'm
even happier that we can do these kinds of things with Steam. This is
the kind of feedback that would have had latency on the order of months
previously, where now we're down to days (or hours in some cases).

Subject: VST Update Confusion

Hi,

Sorry to bother you.

After the latest update in Source, I noticed that the Valve Stress Test
takes longer to finish yet delivers a higher frame rate performance for
most users using mid-to-high range GPUs (judging by various forum
responses). Now, I own an x800Pro, and before I was roughly seeing 65fps
in the VST at 1280x1040 with all settings maxed out. However, after the
latest CS: Source Update I noticed a peformance increase of around 15fps
(on avg 80) with settings all set as high as they can go along with the
6xAA/16xAF/V-Sync on.

Which benchmarking result should be taken as representative of how
Half-Life 2 is going to perform? The VST before the recent update or the
version before? It's difficult to gauge a conclusion from a benchmarking
tool which appears to have changed it's standard response to hardware.

CS: Source is also performing better with an average rate of 73fps. I'm
not complaining at such a fps rate increase of course. It'd be fantastic
to think such an update is an indication of increased performance, but
I'm also surprised such a significant jump could be acheived during
periods of (what I perceive) to be final tweaking of the Source engine.

If this matter could be cleared up I'd be very much grateful. Thanks,
and good luck with finishing the game.

Gabe,

I've just seen the information on HL2Fallout: "Yes, the RC went to VU

Can you confirm this as true, and also, can you hazard a guess at a
rough ball park figure of when we'll see the game go gold, or is this
out of your hands now?

Thanks for confirmation.

Does the release candidate include CS:Source and HL:Source too, or will
they be sent to Vivendi at a later date?
Yes, it includes them.
Excellent :)

Are you sipping the champagne yet, or are you leaving that til the game goes gold?
Once it's in stores.

I'm not so sure that this will be very useful to anyone, but I would like to share it nonetheless. In June, I sent my fan fiction "HL2: The Resistance" (which is currentley the longest hl2 or hl1 fan fiction to date) to Valve Software. Yesterday, which was also the date of the RC, Marc Laidlaw replied to me in this Email.

_________

Dear Matthew:

I took some time to look at your fan novel, The Resistance, and I was pretty impressed. I'm amazed you were able to make so much of the little bit we've revealed. The effort you (and your editors) have put into this really show. I wouldn't say that as a 14 year old you have nothing better to do; this is certainly a fine way to pass the time and develop your m@d writing skilz! I started writing books around your age, and I'm pretty sure this is better than those.

The one piece of advice I'd give you is that while this is a fine way to cut your teeth, you should really steer your writing toward original ideas...it's fun to write for your friends (I still do, myself), but HL2 properties just don't have much of anywhere to go, apart from the fan fic forums. It would be nice if all the work you put into writing eventually gets you into print with some original fiction. If you keep going as you have been, I have no trouble believing you could turn yourself into a professional writer someday. If I showed you what I was writing at 14, you'd have a good laugh.

It's always good to finish what you start, and if you have kept on with the Resistance be sure and send Valve a copy when it's done. And also, we'd love to hear what you think of the finished game...how close we came to your expectations.

Yours,
Marc Laidlaw

Is it possible for people who have purchased Half-Life 2 through Steam, to create backup CDs/DVD so they won't have to go through downloading the whole thing again upon reinstallation?

On a related note, would it be legal, having purchased through Steam, to make a copy of a friends Half-Life 2 CDs/DVD, since you already own a license?

Yes. Yes.

The cache files (what you would be copying) are separate from authentication.

You'll get CS:Source right away as part of the Gold Edition.

Hello Cliffe,
chances are that by the time you get to read this the
answer will be spread throughout the whole community, but still, I was
hoping to infringe on your time for a little clarification regarding the
newly announced Steam purchasing options;

When the "Gold" package details alluded to a Collector's Box, what does
it contain? Is it literally just the box for souvenir purposes, or does
it contain hard copies (making this option viable even for a dial-up
stranded user like myself)?

Will purchasers of the retail CE have access to Day of Defeat: Source at
a later date? I'd presume that it's not included on CD because more
content is required for finalisation (and only Steam could distribute
all that reasonably).

Finally, can you give us any details on international shipping costs, or
are these yet to be confirmed?

Thanks a bunch,

Hi Gabe,

There was an article posted at slashdot (http://slashdot.org/~dasmurf/journal/86404) that looks at the wording of the ELUA. It seems that there is the assumption that we don't own a licensed copy of the game(s) we purchased via steam, instead we are subscribing to a service to use the software.

Many of us are concerned that this could turn into a pay to play (monthly fee) down the road. Can you please verify that we won't have to start paying monthly fees to play the games we already purchased? Can you explain why the language is written in the way it is?

I will post your reply on hl2.net so your fans/customers can be reassured.
