I've never had a problem with steam. I think the only people who could hate steam are warez kiddies who can't play online because of steam.

They've gone beyond that, they now have a faux steam program, you download the games from real steam and then unlock on fake steam and play on fake steam, even get the updates through it. But those people can't play in mp games with the rest of us.(I don't think)

Go buy Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines It's on source engine and it's incredible. It will get you through the initial no mod slump. oh, but definitely not for kids. seriously. Adults only.
