This is a common issue in many games when AA is turned on, its nothing to do with HL2, its to do with the AA algorithms used by nvidia/ati and the way that textures/geometry on edges may either be cut or not when color corrected.
Honestly I'm not 100% sure of the exact cause, but its normal...
Yes, you can play in 'offline mode'.
The pc which meets the specs, put it on the net during installation of steam/the game.
During installation you will have created a steam account and entered the cd key.
After its installed, then take it back off the net, when you try to play HL2 a box...
That is definitely not normal - it looks like the 4.12 driver problem, try switching to older non beta drivers. Like 4.11 (or what was your last stable driver)
Only switch back if its bothering your actual gameplay though, the 4.12's do have slightly better performance in HL2 than the 4.11s.
Legally ? No and No.
(1) With the retail version you need the DVD/CD in the drive to play, even though you activated it.
(2) You still have to install steam/activate/register etc etc online with the retail version.
Because Bungie and Microsoft were not suing each other and clawing at each other's throats.
The final value would be steam sales + retail sales. Due to the lawsuits/confusion between valve/vivendi they don't want to disclose to each other how much as been sold using their method. Thus no figures.
There are lots of tunnels with sludge - your'e going to have to be more specific, or post a screenshot.
Most of the jumps involve 'physics' puzzles setting up a ramp for the jump.
Yeah the one which ships with XP is not really that configurable. (I use zonealarm)
I saw somewhere that Valve will release an update which will make entering/staying in offline mode easier, so lets hope its true.
Have you tried what I said ? Tell your firewall to block steam net access and it will stay in offline mode dude.
(and yes we know its a pain not having a simple 'offline mode' button/checkbox)
You can tell your firewall to block steam net access, it will stay in offline mode.
And no, I have not figured out how to play HL2 without having the stupid (20 to 50MB memory hogging) steam exe/process start up (even though its in offline mode). I have tried all the [legit] suggestions posted...
