Okay. Half-Life 2 is registered and 100 percent verified and says "Ready" in both Half-Life 2 and CS:Source.

I have my password and username remembered and have made sure that the thing in Steam Settings for public computers is not checked.

I disabled my internet, started Steam, it asks to Retry or start Offline, I pick offline. Everything is fine. I exit Steam.

I turn my internet back on. I start Steam.... it connects itself to the internet! What the hell? Doesn't it stay in offline mode until I tell it to go back online?

I don't want it on AT ALL, until I choose myself for it to go back to online mode.

Anyone know whats up?

If you are ONLINE it will be in online mode.If you want offline then keep that connection unplugged. There is no difference really dude.

Don't exit Steam before you reconnect to the 'net. It'll stay in offline mode.

Thats pretty damn lame.

Why can't they let you choose between ONLINE and OFFLINE?

Instead, you have to disable your internet, then turn it back on.

Really freakin silly if you ask me.

what do you meen by you exit steam ... steam still needs to be runing , you get a offline icon

EDIT: i dont dissable my internet but still can run in offline mode

You can tell your firewall to block steam net access, it will stay in offline mode.
And no, I have not figured out how to play HL2 without having the stupid (20 to 50MB memory hogging) steam exe/process start up (even though its in offline mode). I have tried all the [legit] suggestions posted everywhere.

I mean exit Steam, because I don't want a resource hog 50MB+ program open all the time.

I multi task all the time. Thats why I open it and exit it frequently.

Hence why I am pissed at Valve for making me have to unplug my internet everytime I want it in OFFLINE mode, which makes no sense in my mind. Give us the option anytime we want.

Have you tried what I said ? Tell your firewall to block steam net access and it will stay in offline mode dude.
(and yes we know its a pain not having a simple 'offline mode' button/checkbox)

I do not have a third-party firewall. Only the one with XP, which I don't think is doing dick.

When the warning for Steam came up, I told it to Keep Blocking it, but I still think its going online, because it will list Servers.

Yeah the one which ships with XP is not really that configurable. (I use zonealarm)

I saw somewhere that Valve will release an update which will make entering/staying in offline mode easier, so lets hope its true.
