    MSI GeForce FX5200 - WTF!?!?!

The GF FX 5200 is a waste of a perfectly good AGP slot. You'd be better off, if you need to be cheap, with a Radeon 9100 / 9500 non-pro. If you can afford to spend more, a GeForce FX 5600 Ultra or a Radeon 9500 Pro are worth the money.

256MB Radeon a big waste of money?

For a $100 premium, which is the list price difference between the 128- and 256MB versions of the 9800 Pro, I wouldn't buy it. However, 256MB of memory is not useless. It's just not used now. Wait until a few newer games come out in, say, three months or so... I bet they will benefit from...

    Msi vid card

The GeForce FX 5600 has seen a lot of changes in between the product announcement and the early tests, and the actual delivery. Nvidia "flipped" the chip packaging on 5600s to permit a clockspeed boost and vendors like MSI started bundling the cards with 256MB of RAM. It's not a bad card...

    ATi Readon 9700

Yeah - the software mods run programs that suck silicon out the air and magically reform it on the R300 core to turn it into an R350. Cool, huh? WARNING: This thread is FULL of ignorant posts about ATi, ATi products, modding and so on. For reliable information, visit www.rage3d.com

Computer Used To Show HL2 at E3?

Okay: HL2 E3 booth: P4 3.06 HT / R9800Pro 256 / 1GB RAM. 2.0GHz GF4 was used for another demo of the game at E3 to some media, and recording some demos. I posted quotes for this in another thread somewhere, and I was too lazy to re-quote my quotes in that thread. I'm not going to...

System Specs for Half Life 2

HL1 is not an effective guide for framerates in HL2. They are based on completely different technologies, and there are many factors that heavily influence framerate (such as AI and sound) that we know nothing about, really. Throw in the multiple level-of-detail adjustments Newell mentions in...

    Diff. RAM

If a motherboard only supports PC2100 and you install PC3500 on it, the memory will just run at the lower speed.

    I am upgrading...

Nvidia GeForce FX versus ATi R300/350: Nvidia cards are still good, especially the FX 5600 Ultra and 5900 Ultra - very competitive, if not top of the score sheet, in real world tests. Although I don't approve of benchmark cheating, these cards can get the job done in real games. However...

    Minimum Requirements?

Nowadays, ATi sits on more industry-standards committees than Nvidia. Scary, huh?

    good videocard, esp. for hl2?

The GF4 4200 Ti is a decent card, and Gainward makes good products. (that's the link in original post) However, the GF4s only support DX8 (not even DX8.1) in hardware. You want to find yourself a nice DX9 card if you're upgrading now. DX8 will buy you good graphics and most of the...

    FiringSquad HL2 commentary

Yeah, I thought we were kind of talking at cross-purposes about the same thing... Oops. Happens to the best of us on forums sometimes.

    Minimum Requirements?

Well, I've owned and worked with all kinds of cards. ATi's Rage chips were good hardware with rotten drivers. ATi TV tuners were a nightmare. I had TNT1 / 2 / GeForce 2, and liked them. Detonator drivers were and are excellent. (Before that, many things, including my old pride and...

    FiringSquad HL2 commentary

Dr. Sbaitso - From my previous post: "Beta: all the pieces in place, trying to make them play together well. This may or may not be released into the public domain." Companies have betas, usually for testers, possibly the entire public, but they are not release quality. These are done...

    E3 Videos - Anti-Aliasing?

"FX cant do 8x AA. ATI cards have a lot better FSAA and AF then geforce. A geforce needs a 8-10x AA to get close to Radeons 6X AA." No arguments about quality - and the GF FX 8x mode (yes, GF FX do support 8x FSAA) is definitely worse, in looks and performance, than ATi's 6x...
