In Texas, a white teenager burns down her family's home and receives probation. A black one shoves a hall monitor and gets 7 years in prison. The youth had no prior arrest record, and the hall monitor--a 58-year-old teacher's aide--was not seriously injured. But Shaquanda was tried in March 2006 in the town's juvenile court, convicted of assault.

I'm going to have to start ignoring any report of anything that happens south of the Donna-Dixon line - otherwise I'll start thinking there's no hope for humanity.

lol@ donna dixon .....mmmmmm donna dixon

I saw this on digg. It's the most revolting miscarriage of justice I've seen in years. They're ruining this girl's life. By the time she's free, she'll be TWENTY-ONE. She will have missed all the great aspects of teenagedom, and be completely and utterly screwed up. I can only hope that groups like the NAACP make as much noise as possible.

Texas ain't the South. It's the southWEST. Ass.

Yep.

Man, thats some ol' bullsh*t. I bet if i went to that school, i probaby would have got the death penalty by now.

Then he'll be out just in time to buy booze. What will he miss?

They key word there is south, not west Steve. :p

Because nobody says “westsouth”, Pitz.

Look, I'm from Louisiana, and guess who's invited to the South block party? Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, Kentucky, and maybe Virginia. Texas can't come. Arizona is part of the Southwest, too, but you'll probably never see it in the same sentence as the Mason-dixon line. Except that one I just wrote.

It's a nice little twist to add the color of the people to the story to add the race factor. As if it wouldn't have been injustice had both people been white.

Unless it was the same judge and jury in both court cases its hard to draw the racial line between the two respectivly. Obviously, a failure in justice system, too easy to also make it racial. You can pull ridiculus judgments from various courts across the country regaurdles of race, or shall I dare say it, geography (for those in the north who think this happens ONLY in the south)

Does it matter? I live in Michigan. Texas is south of me. Therefore, it's down south.

Well, yes. But I think you're missing the point. I'm talking about the cultural region, not the direction.

I would like to add that I love you. Hard.

"There was the 19-year-old white man, convicted last July of criminally negligent homicide for killing a 54-year-old black woman and her 3-year-old grandson with his truck, who was sentenced in Paris to probation and required to send an annual Christmas card to the victims' family."

Are you ****ing serious?

Just ****ing bomb Texas.

I'm for it. I have family there, but...they'll understand.

Heck, its not even a guy. Its a 14 year old girl named Shaquanda.

Reading the actual article, its pretty apparent that this is a problem in this particular town, not necessarily the entire state. It quotes someone as saying they could never see this happening in Dallas or Houston, and even the prison system seems to think this is ridiculous, citing that 95% of the people in the Youth Commission prison program are unmanageable violent offenders.

They added her colour because that geographical location had always been notorious for its previous anti-black actions, and as noted in the article, continues to go on unnoticed.

Imprisonment for a child pushing an adult? This has got to be a joke or some sort of mis-information...

I live in Houston and I've never heard of this sort of thing being acceptable...

why isnt this on the news?. not that i actually read or watch the news. but you would think that something like this would garner a lot more attention maybe even some public protests. 7 years for pushing someone amongst people that have probably done Much worse is quite harsh.

No- we want to stereotype an entire state. You know since we can't stereotype races anymore. We are humans beings and have to stereotype something! BOMB TEXAS! :P

Didn't somebody do that already?

That's horrendous, but here's an lol... I read this as "14 year old gets 7 years for shaving hall monitor"

"Sorry I killed your family, but hey, Merry Christmas!"

I've really just about had it with people making everything about race. How do you people know this has anything to do with race or that it would have been any different if the kid was white. It's attitudes like that why racist organizations such as NAACP, BET, and UNCF are allowed to exist. I'm not saying the whole "7 years" thing is right, but I was shocked to come in here and see everyone claiming "racism! racism!"

I see where you're coming from, but some things, unfortunately, ARE affected by race, and this looks to be one of them.

They just showed that girl that the system doesn't work.

As much of an injustice as this is, I hope it doesn't turn her into a delinquint and instead pushes her towards activism and working to make it right.

Still, I want to send everyone involved in that decision to jail for 7 years, it's only fair.
