I have heard MANY sources claim that there are thirty years between the end of Half-Life and Half-Life 2.

That just doesn't make any sense. Unless they were all in inanimate suspension for some time, then how could Barney still look young (not a gray hair on his head when at the very, VERY least he would have to be like 50), Dr. Kleiner NOT be dead, Dr. Breen not be dead, (or all severely aged). At least Alyx has aged from a baby, although she doesn't really look 30 years old.

THIRTY years, folks.... So what's the real time frame, or am I missing something?

Although I do remember Dr. Breen mentioning something about immortality on one of his recorded propaganda videos.

P.S. I already posted this in conspiracy forum but decided this was better.

Pretty sure it's 10 years...15 at the most.

It's very nice to say that you have sources, but it's even better when you list them. ;)

Yeah, it's most likely ten years, possibly 12 or 15.

30 years just don't make sense, imo.

Indeed. Unless you assume that Alyx is around forty. We see a picture of her in Eli's lab, and she looked around ten, didn't she?

Alyx is most definitely not forty. Hell, I'm not even sure she's out of her teens.

It's more like ten years. Just enough time for Breen to get comfortable and rebellion to ferment, but not enough time for humanity to be exterminated by Breen's reproductive 'suppression field.'

My sources were mainly forum peeps and I think (?) some preview/review somewhere, I don't know.

But it just doesn't seem to work out very practically because to make Alyx reasonably aged, you have to make, say, Dr. Kleiner VERY old. He was bald/white haired in Half-Life!

Oh yeah, and if it was 15 years then Alyx would still be a teenager... sick.

Hm... I thought she was a baby in the picture. But I guess I was wrong.

Oh wait... was she a baby in the picture? Because some just said on the other board that she looked like ten.

Whoops. My mistake. I could've sworn she was older in that pic. I must be going crazy. Which is actually quite possible.

@Messermeier
Good point. Well I guess that leaves enough elbow room for the timeline to be plausible.

Oh, you happen to know for a fact how old Alyx was at the time of the Black Mesa Incident? Because I don't. If you have credible sources that disclose this information...please, by all means, share them with us!

You can't go by the picture, either, because we don't know how old the picture itself is.

lol. imagine forty years gap. then maybe it will be the same for hl2 and hl3... alyx will be a grandmother, the rest of the scientists and barney six feet under.

and instead of a combine universe valve can just dream up of another future scenario, maybe not combine this time but vortiguants who have taken over earth, and forty years will be sufficient to explain how it happened... lol...then hl4 will be the zombies turn.

12.3555161228897987654 years actually, to be precise add another three thousand fives, and two ones, followed by one zero.

Dr. Kleiner doesn't appear in HL1
he is mentioned as recommending gordon in the manual, that's it

Only if you assume that picture was taken the exact same day as HL1 took place. The photo is likely years older.

Alyx was probably around ten years old when her father rescued her from Black Mesa. Now she's around 20-25.

I would place Alyx at around twenty. She says that Eli created Dog to protect her when she was a child, this implies that they have been in the City 17 area for at least fifteen years. If the Seven Hour War is meant to have occured like now, 2004, HL2 could well be occuring in the 2020 area. Consider nothing seems to have aged in the game. The technology, computer equipment, TV's etc seems stuck in this day and age, not some projected development ordinary people would have in say five years time. The vehicles are similarly stuck in todays timeframe. In fact I consider them too sterotypical for Eastern Europe, I have travelled extensively there and people have very modern cars on the whole. But I can understand this oversight as I appreciate the Valve designers wouldn'thave that knowledge in the USA.

Estimating from the period of time when the picture was taken as near the events of HL1, saying Alyx is about 2 or 3 in that picture then i would say roughly 17 years between HL1 and 2. This is because Eli says he "pulled" Alyx out of Black Mesa which kinda implies youth.

You assume the picture was taken immediately prior to the events of HL1. People don't only keep recent pictures with them.
